Matthew was born in 1920 into a Filey family - his father Tom Ross Cammish was a local builder. The family were devout Methodists and Matthew preached his first sermon in 1934 at Ebenezer Church in Filey when he was only 14 years of age.
After attending Leeds University he served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and then embarked upon a teaching career.
He took his first headship in 1956 in Swindon and in 1978 became the President of the National Association of Headteachers.
Throughout his life he was a prolific Methodist preacher and left all his sermons to myself.
Matthew passed away in 2018.
