It is impossible to say exactly for how long people have lived in Filey. The discovery in 1949 of a Mesolithic lake side dwelling site on Flixton Carr, only six miles from Filey indicates that prehistoric man, almost certainly nomadic, was to be seen in the vicinity of Filey.
In succeeding millenia waves of invading tribes from across the North Sea and Southern England moved into and through the district. Bronze Age tumuli and an extensive iron Age cemetery near Burton Fleming show that people have lived temporarily or permanently close to Filey Bay for several thousands of years.
From those days, almost certainly, there would be a small community here surviving by farming and fishing. Certainly there was a village here at the Norman Conquest for Filey is mentioned in the Domesday Book. We know too that Filey men landed fish in both Grimsby and Whitby in the 12th century because records show that the Pope was asked to settle a dispute concerning tithes.
For nine centuries then Filey has been a community whose living has been from the land and sea, and for a century and a half from its role as a seaside resort.
